5 Commercials, 5 Days is local videographer Mike Jones' personal "Thank You" to the Oklahoma City community for an amazing 2010.

To throw out his collective high-five, Jones came up with the idea of writing, shooting, producing and editing five commercials for five local charities/non-profits in five days.

After 7,500 online votes, Easter Seals of Oklahoma, Parents Assistance Center, The Spero Project, YWCA OKC and and Positive Tomorrows were the chosen five.

During the week of January 23rd, volunteers, professionals, friends, coworkers and family members joined together to bring 5C5D to life.

We say good job, good idea and thanks for leading by example.

    This is pretty spectacular stuff.

Really puts our little snow flurry from earlier this month into perspective, no?

This billboard featuring Blake Griffin being shot out of a cannon is sitting atop a store on La Brea Avenue in Los Angeles called Undefeated.

LA's obviously way outside our local jurisdiction, but Blake the Quake is Oklahoma property so we're giving this one the Local tag.

  • JCPenny's New Logo

What did you do when you were in school?

Luke Langhus, a third-year design student at the University of Cincinnati, just designed JCPenny's new logo.

Not to be too critical of student work, but, yeah, it looks like a third-year student from Cincinnati did it. Even though it kinda reads "JCP" "Enney," we do commend him for not going crazy with the redesign. Remember the Gap fiasco?

Actually, this is pretty much the original/current Gap logo, but red.

Here's the old logo just in case you haven't been into a JCPenny store since 1997.

  • Sears. Suckers.

Freelancers and agencies alike will love this. Client-side friends, take note.

Sears is in the process of having agencies pitch for business. And they want the rights to all the spec work pitched, even from the agencies that aren't chosen, for FREE.

So Adam Wohl, co-founder/CD at MIR in New York, gets to chatting with a Sears rep online and asks if they'll come tell him what's wrong with his broken air conditioner - for free.

To which the rep says..... skip ahead to 3:25 for the ironic conclusion.

  • 10 Lessons for Young Designers from John C. Jay of Wieden+Kennedy

    / Comments (0)

This isn't just for designers. Whatever your job, if you're in the creative industry, write these down.

1: Be authentic. The most powerful asset you have is your individuality, what makes you unique. It’s time to stop listening to others on what you should do.

2: Work harder than anyone else and you will always benefit from the effort.

3: Get off the computer and connect with real people and culture. Life is visceral.

4: Constantly improve your craft. Make things with your hands. Innovation in thinking is not enough.

5: Travel as much as you can. It is a humbling and inspiring experience to learn just how much you don’t know.

6: Being original is still king, especially in this tech-driven, group-grope world.

7: Try not to work for stupid people or you’ll soon become one of them.

8: Instinct and intuition are all-powerful. Learn to trust them.

9: The Golden Rule actually works. Do good.

10: If all else fails, No. 2 is the greatest competitive advantage of any career.
